A big welcome to all tennis players. October represents the start of a new, exciting 2022-23 season of tennis at Silver Sands.

    Court Director/Tennis Pro

The Tennis Committee is thrilled to have D’Wayne Begay as our new Court Director and Tennis Pro. D’Wayne is a USTA high performance teaching professional and is also a Wheelchair tennis instruction specialist. He is currently coaching the #1 wheelchair junior in the U.S.

D’Wayne’s first official day on the job is October 24 and his term runs until April 22. He is looking forward to welcoming back players from last season as well as players who are new to Silver Sands.

D’Wayne’s hours of operation at the tennis courts are from 7 am to 11:30 am on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. He is available for lessons and will also be offering clinics to players of all abilities. D’Wayne can be reached at begay10spro@aol.com or 505- 239-3500.

    Court Update

Courts 1 and 5 have been resurfaced and should be ready for play on October 10. Resurfacing 2 courts per year keeps our courts in top playing condition.

A new state of the art Playmate Ace ball machine has been ordered. At this time, a delivery date for the new machine is not known but there will be an announcement when it arrives. D’Wayne is intending to provide a demonstration of the machine to all interested players.

    Online Booking System

Silver Sands has an on-line booking system for reserving tennis courts as well as for viewing and registering for events and clinics. This system has been in place for the past few years and works extremely well. This year, the on-line booking system goes live on October 27 for court bookings beginning November 1. Remember you can only book a court 5 days in advance for doubles and 2 days in advance for singles.

Players already registered on the system are not required to do anything. For players who have not registered go to silversands.tennisbookings.com and follow the prompts to create an account. When your registration has been processed, you will receive an email with your login and password. To access the system, you either need to be an owner or renter. If you have any problems with using the system please contact D’Wayne.

A brochure describing everything you need to know about tennis at Silver Sands will be available this fall. We expect to have more exciting program announcements to share with you about the upcoming season, including exhibitions and inter-club play.

Looking forward to seeing you on the courts this season. If you wish to contact the Tennis Committee with any questions or comments, please contact the Chair, Neil Jacoby at njacoby@rogers.com.

    Fallen Palms

    fallenpalms2

Five palms lost their heads at Silver Sand in the past several weeks. There was no damage to people, homes, structures, or cars. It is too soon to know the causes for this, but we have been advised we are not the only valley community to lose palms in the last few months. Two of the affected palms are behind the fountain (weeks apart) and the other three are on La Jolla, Marbella and the clubhouse parking circles.

The Landscape Committee has an ongoing palm risk assessment program which began in 2014. We are in the process of getting approval for a new vendor to assess the palms and are awaiting Board approval of our choice. This new vendor will do a level 2 Risk Assessment and provide a report. The report will detail areas of concern which will include conditions of tree trunks, heads, fronds, watering conditions and any sign of fungus or bug infestations among many other indicators of tree health.

The Landscape Committee will share more information as it becomes available.

    Website Improvements

    web-c

In response to the feedback received from the recent survey, we have made some important changes to the Silver Sands website.

A new Quick Links / How to Use the Website section has been added to the home page. On the left are direct links to some of the most frequently accessed sections of the website. On the right are links to a series of short video tutorials on how to use various parts of the website.

The Documents section has been restructured and made more prominent with direct access from the top menu. The drop-down menu features a Key Documents page that provides links to the some of the most frequently-viewed documents, a Browse Documents option and a Search function.

Links to external websites such as TownSq, DwellingLive and the Court Booking system have been made more prominent. They are included in the Quick Links section as well as in a separate External Links list at the bottom of every page.

The Renter/Guest Information and Renter/Guest Registration pages have been combined so that all of the information is available in one place.

A new Website Support page has been added which can be accessed from Support on the main menu. This page contains links to all the video tutorials.

A new People section has been added under the Community menu. This features all the “Helping Make our Community Great” profiles that have appeared in the newsletter.

As well, a number of stylistic enhancements have been made throughout the website.

Please take a few minutes to browse the updated website and if you have any comments or questions, send an email to web@ssrchoa.com.

    Thank you.
